Through MECC, I gained my first real exposure to consulting and developed foundational skills such as problem-solving, client engagement, and data analysis through hands-on projects that reflected real business challenges. The experience served as a springboard toward a consulting career at McKinsey. Additionally, the networking opportunities within MECC and with visiting firms gave me valuable insight into the industry and helped solidify my decision to pursue consulting as a career.

MECC gave me exposure to a wide range of industries—from a local boba shop on my first project to a surfing startup—showing me how quickly consultants must learn new spaces. I realized that I genuinely enjoy ramping up in new industries, which drew me to consulting. Through MECC’s project work, I also built core consulting skills, including managing client relationships, structuring a workplan for my workstream, and taking an ambitious ask and delivering real value—preparing me well for a typical McKinsey engagement.

Joining MECC was unequivocally the best decision I made during my time at the University of Michigan. As a first semester freshman unsure of exactly where I wanted to take both my college and professional careers, I was given all of that direction- and then some- by MECC. I immediately gained real work experience across a multitude of industries and was trusted with the responsibility of facing clients, eventually managing projects of my own. My project and executive board experiences were extremely rewarding, opening doors to post-grad opportunities I could not have attained without the support of this club, all while creating lasting memories with my soon-to-be lifelong friends. I cannot imagine my college experience without MECC and I am looking forward to staying in touch as an alum!

MECC was instrumental in giving me the teaching, mentorship, project experience, and community that kickstarted my career in consulting. From professional development as a new member, to dedicated mentorship from upperclassmen, to working with incredible coaches and eventually stepping into leadership as a Project Manager, MECC prepared me in ways I still rely on today.

MECC was an invaluable experience in not only helping me land a consulting job after graduation, but succeed in the role as well. Working directly with clients as a consultant, a project manager, and in an advisory role greatly contributed to my understanding of client work and the life cycle of a consulting project. Outside of client work, the resources provided from targeted sessions to informal mentoring delivered business insight above and beyond my formal engineering education.
